Have you ever met a person who seemed to understand you intuitively? From my own observations of these effective communicators, I have adopted a few important methods that have improved my own success in communicating. You are encouraged to try the following five points and measure your own success.

First, look people in the eye when you are speaking to them. This establishes trust and helps your listener to read your message. It also allows you to see her reaction and to adjust to it. Second, good communicators will frequently address a person by their name. People love the sound of their own name and will reward you by paying attention. You cannot use their name, however, if you cannot recall it, so concentrate on remembering it the first time that you hear it. Not surprisingly, saying a person’s name will help you remember it.

Third, although painful to admit it, no one is interested in what you want, and they will place their own needs above yours. Successful communicators will take the perspective of the listener and be sure to satisfy her. Rest assured that your needs will be met later.
